We’ve all been there haven’t we? You know, those trade show venues that are stuck out near an airport or industrial centre miles away from anywhere. The kind of place that’s not really worth the air miles. Thankfully, NRF isn’t such a venue. Indeed, the self-styled ‘Big Show’ is not only the event to network and exchange ideas on the future of retail, the Javits Convention Centre has a brilliant location close to Manhattan’s beating heart.
Taking place between 12 and 14 January the show’s superb position means you’ll be well placed to explore the city’s many wonders. For a touch on inspiration we’ve gathered a list of unmissable experiences, old and new.

Walk the line (as Johnny Cash almost said)
Just a stone’s throw from the venue The High Line has become a must-do on any visitor’s list. The re-imagined and reinvented disused train track, suspended high above the ground, was saved by a group of local people and transformed into an elevated public park in 2009. The result is spectacular, allowing you to explore the city on foot, far above the hustle and bustle. Along your walk you’ll discover nature, some stunning works of art, food, coffee, architecture and epic views, as the track weaves its way through the city skyline.
If you fancy a detour, leave The Highline at 16th St. and explore Chelsea Market. Think street food-style restaurants, wine bars, designer sample sales and unique furniture stores.

The Vessel, Hudson Yards
At the end of the High Line lies a newly created district – Hudson Yards. It’s marked out by a cluster of futuristic, glass-clad skyscrapers which surround a plaza containing The Vessel – a 16-storey architectural masterpiece made up of a lattice of 154 staircases imagined by Thomas Heatherwick and Heatherwick Studio. The public are welcome to climb these. If you take up the challenge, you’ll encounter a new view at every turn, unlocking the city’s varied, ever-changing and breathtaking skyline. You’ll need a free ticket, which you can book in advance online.
Try to visit at sunset when the views are next level.

Fill-up: Kat’z Delicatessen
There’s nothing like a full day on the feet to create an appetite and Katz’s Deli is a New York institution. Its legendary pastrami, corned beef and Jewish deli classics have gained a cult following. The spot even featured in the 1989 movie When Harry Met Sally and, in true kitsch style, there’s a plaque to commemorate where Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal sat. This joint is no-frills, but that’s the magic of it. Sky-high sandwiches, classic sodas and an interior from years gone by deliver a seriously authentic Big Apple experience.
Order the pastrami reuben with a side of fries, plus a must-have gherkin.

Fill-up: Catch, NYC
A casual 20-minute stroll to Chelsea puts you in the seriously hip territory of Soho House, the Standard Hotel and Catch restaurant. Catch offers a beautiful interior, a buzzing vibe and fantastic sea food. It’s typically frequented by New York’s beautiful people and is known as a great place to spot the odd celeb or two. It’s not a cheap night out so perhaps one for your best customer.

A livener: Attaboy
After a hard day’s business why not celebrate with colleagues, clients and contacts over an ice-cold Manhattan at this award-winning Lower East Side bar. Attaboy is an atmospheric speakeasy cocktail spot, founded by renowned New York bartenders Sam Ross and Michael McIlroy. Here, you’ll find cosy booths, the freshest ingredients, and award-winning staff who know their craft inside out.
Be warned – there’s no menu. So be prepared to bare your tastes, and your soul, to the bar staff.
